18th Street Bridge and Approach Roadway

18th Street Bridge and Approach Roadway. This project, scheduled for construction during 2004 and 2005, involves the construction of a new, 658-foot bridge across the Cedar River, just upstream of the current bridge.

The approaches to the new bridge will also be reconstructed from Commercial Street to Sycamore Street. In addition, many enhancement features will be included in the corridor and on the bridge, such as pedestrian overlooks, ornamental railings depicting the truss shape of the original structure, ornamental lighting, a historic plaza area with an interpretive kiosk, and sculptured concrete railing posts. Visualizations were provided at several citizens’ committee meetings to help convey the enhancement ideas and obtain additional citizen input. The bridge is on schedule for a February letting date.
