Addition
to Grout Museum
The Sullivan Brothers Veterans Museum and Research Center
will honor the service and sacrifice of all Iowa veterans
from the Civil War to the present. The entrance to the
27,000 square foot addition to the Grout Museum will be
at the corner of Park Avenue and Washington Street and
the two-story building will run parallel to Washington.
A statue of the Lone Sailor, one of only six in the nation,
will greet visitors on the plaza and the atrium will house
vintage military aircraft. Inside, tours will begin with
an orientation film in the theater, continuing on to temporary
and permanent exhibition galleries located on two floors.
The story of Iowa veterans, and those who supported their
efforts on the home front, will be told in a combination
of traditional and innovative formats including interactive,
electronic exhibits and large screen presentation. A research
library will house oral and video interviews, a veterans
database, books, documents, artifacts and photographs.
There will be access to Pioneer Hall, Engine of the Heartland
and Howrey Hall.
The museum is named in honor of the five Sullivan brothers
from Waterloo who died serving together in the Navy in
World War II. Their story, which is representative of that
of millions of Iowans who have served their nation in times
of war and peace, will be a featured permanent exhibition.
